Letter from the SF Chronicle 01/09/26

Renee Good was a mother of three children who was trying to drive away when she was shot in the face multiple times at close range by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent who was not threatened, according to the many videos of the shooting.

This tragedy was as avoidable as it was foreseeable. It is part of a recent rash of ICE shootings.

President Donald Trump is on a crusade to deport as many brown and Black people as he can, notwithstanding his false promise that his administration would only target hardened criminals.

Most immigrants pose no threat to the safety and security of the United States. This does not matter to Trump. The U.S. was sewn from the seeds of diversity. Immigrants are part of our communities. They commit crimes at a far lower rate than native born citizens.

Too many ICE agents feel empowered to escalate and use fatal force as part of their machismo. They could do their legitimate work without provocation, but choose not to.

It is long past due that we have public hearings and investigations into the criminality being used to root out supposed criminals.
